Building cross-platform play for a game presents many intricacies for developers. For the two live service games of Phoenix Labs' Dauntless and Bungie's Destiny 2, bringing crossplay to audiences came with many unique challenges. This talk will present two case studies of the experiences each team went through in bringing their players together on various platforms. We'll compare and contrast the goals which these teams set out to accomplish, the approaches and decisions that needed to be made along the way, and how both crossplay features were released and maintained in their respective games. Learnings and reflections will be shared from the two teams, from overcoming the challenges faced by a small team delivering on the One Dauntless dream to standing up a new Bungie social graph uniting players in a single Destiny Universe.
Attendees will leave the session with an understanding of the systems needed and considerations required when building cross-platform play for a game, as well as potential mitiatigations and solutions for the various challenges that may arise during development.
