In this talk Epic Games will describe recent advances in rendering in UE4 and improvements to the low-level rendering abstraction RHI (Rendering Hardware Interface) of UE4 for modern APIs such as D3D12 and Vulkan. This presentation will go through the challenges of shipping D3D12 support in Fortnite and what changes were made to the engine to improve performance and stability. We will take a deep dive into engine performance as well as tools and processes used to gather metrics and optimize performance. The talk also takes a forward look where we aim to take the engine to better accommodate concepts of modern APIs to reduce overhead and open up for using advanced features enabled by modern APIs, while still preserving compatibility and high performance on other platforms and APIs.
