This talk looks at traffic simulation in a large urban environment, exploring the challenges involved and the approaches taken to them, and touches on a few open problems and ideas for future work. The focus is on the concept of scheduling traffic flow for a short period into the future, rather than frame-by-frame simulation, and the implications of this across all aspects of the simulation, including spawning, levels of detail, path finding and following, and dealing with real-time changes such as player interaction.
Attendees will walk away with an understanding of the challenges of simulating urban street life, in particular the benefits and complexities of scheduling the future movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
This presentation is primarily intended for AI developers, especially those interested in populating large environments and living worlds.
