Creating a world of dynamically shifting alliances and intriguing diplomatic exchanges between over 40 factions while making sure the player is having fun is not a small challenge in a sandbox grand strategy game. This retrospective talk reveals how the developers implemented the Diplomacy AI in Total War: Three Kingdoms, how they re-shaped the system they had carried over from our previous game, what techniques, tricks and design philosophy they used, and how this impacted the game's overall quality.

In this multi-disciplinary talk, Senior AI Programmer Duygu Cakmak will explain the technical implementation of the system, while Senior Game Designer Csaba Toth will focus on the design and finetuning part of the topic.
