Can LLMs generate video game levels, among the many other things they can do? This session provides an overview of how to generate game levels with large language models, including but not limited to GPT-3, GPT-4, and Llama. Various strategies based on prompting, finetuning, and bootstrapping are discussed. The talk is accessible and some of the ideas are immediately actionable.
Attendees will learn when to consider LLMs for content generation, how to represent levels as character strings, when you need to finetune, how to include prompts in tuning to control generation, and something about the limitations of LLMs.
This talk is for anyone interested in level design and generative AI. I will describe several ways of using LLMs to generate levels, which may be useful both as a design assistance or ideation tool, and for runtime level generation in roguelikes and similar. Some of the strategies described can be tried by anyone with access to ChatGPT or almost any other LLM, others require more machine learning knowledge.
