Two years ago, IGDA’s Free and Open Source SIG hosted a roundtable at GDC that discussed the potential benefits to the gaming industry of creating a foundation to serve the gaming industry’s needs in open source software, much as the Academy Software Foundation, currently home to six different digital, Open Source tools for film. Foundation such as these boast steering and technical committee memberships across a wide range of players from studios, software companies, universities and standards bodies; participation in an Open Source Foundation allows the partners, and any individual, to contribute to the tool sets free from IP and competition concerns with shared goals and governance. At GDC this year, a similar foundation for the game industry will be launched, beginning with a single open source project and with plenty of opportunity for the addition of others. Come discuss, and help begin to shape, what such a foundation could mean for the industry and how it might best impact the future of game development.

After attending this session an attendee will have a greater understanding of what an open source foundation is, how it works, how one could shape the future of the industry and how they can participate in it.

Intended Audience
