Apex Legends started as a small Battle Royale mode inside Titanfall that quickly grew into its own stand-alone game that brought numerous innovations to the Battle Royale space. Building such a product required the team at Respawn to take a closer look at the genre's core tenets, as well as their own team instincts.
This talk will go through the development of Apex Legends and will explore how the team at Respawn identifies opportunities, both from a product design and a game design standpoint and how this transformed Apex Legends from being "Titanfall Battle Royale" to having its own identity.
Attendees will come away with insight on Respawn's development process and how to identify opportunities for innovation within a genre, as well as how introspection can be used to identify and combat a team's blind spots.
This talk is intended for all designers and developers looking to understand the intent, decisions, and challenges that comes with expanding an existing franchise. Fans of Apex Legends will also appreciate a behind the scenes look at the game. Prior knowledge of Apex Legends, Titanfall 2, and Battle Royale genre is recommended.
