Apex Legends features a colorful cast of characters fighting to show that they are the best of the best in a televised arena. Just as our Legends strive to demonstrate their superiority, Respawn introduced Ranked Leagues to let players prove their skill and accomplishments. Join us on a guided tour on the development of Ranked Leagues, as we reveal the data that provided the impetus for introducing a separate Ranked playlist, the challenges of making a ruleset work in the context of a Battle Royale, the tradeoffs we made to balance a fair measure of skill, simplicity, and clear avenues of progress, the modelling simulations we ran to predict if our system would work as desired, the roadblocks we ran into once the system actually went live into the hands of millions of players, and where we hope we can take Ranked Leagues to in the future.


Attendees will take away lessons on how Respawn structured a Ranked mode that tries to balance a fair measure of skill, simplicity, and clear progression; reduce ladder anxiety and churn, and how data analytics were used to measure the effects of changes before and after the launch of Ranked Leagues.
