This presentation provides a foundation from which designers, developers, game marketers and others can draw an understanding of games made by people of the African diaspora. Its aim is to make visible, through aggregation and showcase, the contributions of African Americans, African nationals and other diaspora members. It is a one stop experience offering case studies of analog and digital games created by black people.
Treating games as a cultural media form, the presentation highlights the work to provide a wide tour of the characteristics of the developer's work. It helps illustrate the diversity of game design and development, showcasing not only diasporic cultural elements but also demonstrating how games mad by black people share similarities and differ from others. From sci-fi RPGs to rap battle games, from African culture informed action games, to traditional car racing - attendees may be surprised to learn who made what.
Attendees will be provided a dense collection of games from the global black community, illustrating both the unique design characteristics and the idea that black games are more than embedding cultural elements in conventional gameplay. Attendees will also be given a platform for sharing new releases made by African diaspora developers.
The content is designed for audiences of developers who are seeking to understand games with which they may not be familiar as well as business developers who are seeking to understand the space of African diaspora games. This is a general talk giving specific examples, stats, and context quickly.
