Crusader Kings III needed a character portrait system capable of depicting tens of thousands of memorable characters, supporting inheritance recognizable within families, and immediately reacting to gameplay changes. In this talk, you will hear about how the team at Paradox Development Studio achieved that, what issues they encountered, how they solved them and what mistakes were made, both from technical and artistic standpoints. Some topics you'll hear about are the inheritance system, the evolution of the portrait parameter setup from body part presets to more granular parameters, the shift from a stylized art style to a more realistic one, and the balance between blend shapes and skeletal transforms.

Takeaway

While the talk is specifically about the system used in Crusader Kings III, the challenges encountered, solutions used and mistakes made should be interesting to anybody who is considering implementing a system for procedurally created characters in their project.

Intended Audience

Programmers, 3D artists, technical artists of all levels interested in procedurally created characters
