Gender-neutral language is quickly gaining ground and the videogame industry is more aware than ever that players are not exclusively male. Female players want to feel represented, and they want to be referred to with their feminine pronouns. Furthermore, non-binary people also want to be included. Temtem is a pioneer in terms of using gender-inclusive language. In this title, players get to choose their pronouns, and all other characters in the game will address them accordingly. We will dive more deeply into how this became possible: the challenges, the decisions made, and how the audience felt about them. In this session I will review how non-binary language has been used in Temtem to include a masculine, feminine and NB form in all dialogue addressed to players, depending on the pronouns of their choice.


After this session, attendees will have a better understaning of the diference between gendered and ungendered languages, what the challenges are and possible solutions to make their game more inclusive.
