Format: Session

Vault Recording: Video

Audience Level: All

In this Design Post Mortem, Head of Design Moritz Wagner will talk about the challenges the team faced when trying to push the boundaries and re-imagening a genre. The talk will cover every step of the process from initial pillars and direction-goals of Shadow Gambit to details on the biggest changes were executed by the team. The talk will focus on the following main-topics:
1) How they designed multiple playable characters to create synergy between them and kept them balanced enough to allow free character-selection for missions.
2) How adding free character and mission-selection forced them to completely re-think many parts of the game, especially narrative tools.
3) How the changes to a more open-world inspired approach to level-design made them re-think missions and locations.
4) How they built a setting that embraces the "gamey" aspects of their genre and embeds them directly into the narrative to enhance immersion, instead of breaking it.
5) How they changed tutorials in order to teach the game better to newer players, while still keeping veterans engaged.

Takeaway

Attendees will learn about how the team tackled major structural changes to an already defined genre without breaking the core that makes it tick. They will also learn about many of the small issues and challenges that arose during that process and how the team tackled them.

Intended Audience

This session will prove useful to anyone who has an interest in iterating on an existing genre. It will also provide insight for people that enjoy the intricate design-challenges faced in the making of stealth and tactics games. There are no prerequisites regarding knowledge for this session.
