Topic: Business & Marketing

Format: Session

Vault Recording: TBD

Audience Level: All

Most community managers are familiar with building a community for a new game, but few have taken over the community of a well-established title. Leilani Leones, Game Community Manager at Kongregate (Animation Throwdown, Bit Heroes, Pocket Politics), has been building successful communities over the past three years; in her talk, she will share the experience of inheriting the community of a now 3-year old title. Her talk includes takeaways from the transition from a small, tight-knit community managed by a 3-person indie dev team to a flourishing community backed by the resources of a full studio and publisher. Particular attention will be given to the process of building a new, democratically-elected player council, created to involve players in game development and decision-making about the community.

Takeaway

Attendees will leave the talk knowing best practices for taking over an established community in the event of a transition, merger, or acquisition; as well as the pitfalls and perks of creating a player council.

Intended Audience

Anyone interested in guiding a game community smoothly through organizational changes and anyone interested in curating a group of players tasked with being a representative voice for players.
