Creating Reactive and Superpowered Allies for 'Marvel's Spider-Man 2'

Jesse Werner  (Senior Gameplay Programmer, Insomniac Games)

Pass Type: All Access Pass, Core Pass - Get your pass now!

Topic: Programming

Format: Session

Vault Recording: TBD

Audience Level: All

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a fast-paced, high-spectacle, action game where heroes team up to take down both street-level criminals and high-stakes supervillains. Having a hero as agile and powerful as Spider-Man challenged Insomniac Games to find creative solutions to create powerful and responsive allies. Allies need to match pace with Spider-Man, adapt to each player's playstyle, and be present throughout gameplay in a way that is believable.

In this talk, Jesse Werner, Senior Gameplay Programmer at Insomniac Games, details the methods used to adapt to player input and playstyle, build sharable ally modules that can be customized for character expression, and create team-up mechanics that dynamically support player actions to add spectacle without disrupting player intent.

Attendees will learn methods for building customizable modules for rapid ally development, frameworks for cooperative mechanics that supplement player actions, and tools to improve the visibility and perceived cooperation of allies.

Intended Audience

This is for programmers and designers who are creating their own ally systems for combat, traversal, or exploration. All levels of developers interested in co-operative AI systems are welcome.
