As platforms for engaging players have proliferated, Gen Z and Alpha gamers have developed a taste for new kinds of interactivity. This talk will cover a variety of social gaming platforms that engage with players ages 10-16, where they are empowered to become game designers and influencers themselves. What are the ethics of engaging in design in these spaces? How can we support these new player/designers with best practices as an industry? What kinds of experiences do they crave, and what opportunities do these platforms provide for both established and up-and-coming designers? Most importantly - how can we use what we know about Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism movements in these spaces to connect with, support and amplify a new generation of players who will demand much more from their online social platforms? This talk will cover concrete development in these spaces, outline successes and opportunities for designers and developers from all walks of life.
Attendees will learn how to evaluate platforms for design opportunity and engage with a younger generation without completely stepping away from best practices that have worked for games in the past.
