How can schools better engage with Twitch / YouTube game streaming culture and students' deep interest in it, and how can schools better teach and support studies of streaming and games? This talk will begin with a brief history of the streaming industry: major figures, iconic moments, institutional shifts, idioms, etc. Then it will dive into two case studies at NYU Game Center: (1) a class where students learn how to stream critically while relating their personal experience to a sociological text, and (2) a weekly department streaming show designed to bring academic community together. The session ends with an overview of various streaming initiatives at different universities and programs. In short, this is a primer and blueprint for games academics and games departments to engage more deeply with live game streaming culture.
This talk features syllabi, course structures, lesson plans, examples of student work, data and outcomes, and general advice for running classes focused on streaming at any school. Attendees will takeaway new understanding of the labor of streaming, as well as strengths / challenges of teaching streaming in an academic mode.
Academics, educators, and teachers with little prior engagement with streaming are encouraged to attend. Those with more familiarity with streaming will gain insights / resources for streaming in their own schools. Students may also gain a window into how academic communities can integrate streaming, to spearhead their own initiatives.
