This lecture will reveal how audio design supported and enhanced players emotional experience in the unique mobile platform social adventure game, 'Sky: Children of the Light'. All of the design and technologies of this game including the story arc, the touch-navigation system, and the wide variety of means of communication exist to immerse players into the game deeply and stir their emotions through involvement with the story and communication with friends. To this purpose, sound effects also needed to be designed to fire players emotions and imagination in harmony with the music. Since this game changes its state incessantly depending on the player actions, sound effects needed to constantly modulate their event state and quality of playback instead of utilizing one-shot sounds. thatgamecompany's sound designer Ritsu Mizutani will share how his approach of designing and efficient implementation helped realize deepening player emotions.

Attendees will learn about various ideas of how sound effects can evoke emotions of players, and immerse them into more intuitive communication and play with others; they will also gain insight on efficient implementation, such that the team can achieve these goals.

Intended Audience

This session is aimed at game audio professionals and those interested in game audio. Some experience and knowledge of game audio and engineering are helpful, but other game development professionals, as well as students, may gain new insight into game audio.
