Entertainment VR/AR: Bringing Life to the Reef: 'Undersea' AI in Magic Leap's Spatial Computing Platform

Zeno Saviour (Gameplay Programmer, Magic Leap, Inc.)

Pass Type: All Access Pass, VRDC Add On - Get your pass now!

Topic: VR/AR

Format: Session

Vault Recording: TBD

Audience Level: All

Undersea on the Magic Leap One is an ambient experience that transforms your space into a dynamic undersea environment with reefs, corals, vistas, and creatures. Each creature in our experience exhibits different behaviors based on its environment and its species type. For instance, the user can reach out to a curious pufferfish, and watch as it follows their hand.

We will go over the process of creating Mixed Reality-ready NPCs in Undersea by doing a tech breakdown of all the behaviors that form the core of the creature experience in Undersea. We will also look at some challenges that we faced as a result of short development time and how we addressed them. We will go over the A.I system architecture that allowed us to reuse creature behaviors but still get varying results across different agents, fasten the process of on-boarding a new agent, and support parallel work by designers, artists, animators, programmers, and audio engineers.

Attendees will get an understanding of how to architect Mixed Reality ready NPC systems that will facilitate faster workflows across design, art, and programming to create agents and its behaviors.

Intended Audience

All levels of game developers interested in building NPCs for mixed reality.
