Topic: Visual Arts
Vault Recording: TBD
Audience Level: Intermediate
In this session Jason Hickey, Lead Environment Artist at Insomniac Games on 'Marvel's Spider-Man', will discuss how to make better environments for games using skills that don't just involve art. Jason will show how to improve your collaboration, planning and decision making skills so that you can reduce iteration. These lessons will give the artist and their team more time for polish while minimizing crunch. You'll have tools to fill in the gaps when direction is missing as well as methods to build a greater empathy for the project's goals instead of focusing only on the minutiae.
Attendees will leave knowing how to reduce iteration of work by getting embedded with design from the very beginning of a level. They will also have new tools to help collaboration such as how to create your own pillars and a simple way to budget a level across departments.
My target audience is two groups: Anyone who wants to/already does make art but is new to working with design or has doubts about how important this relationship is, and for the people who work with artists and want to get insight on how they think.
