'Erica': How and How Not to Score a Film-Game Hybrid

Topic: Audio

Format: Session

Vault Recording: Video

Composer Austin Wintory offers a post-mortem of his complex adaptive score to the Full Motion Video game ERICA. Due to the film-like nature of the game, the score became a laboratory for truly exploring the age-old question of "What are the differences between film scoring and game scoring?" That question, along with the normal post-mortem topics of the project's origins, musical development and final recording processes, will frame the talk. Finally, Wintory will detail the immensely difficult task it was to adapt to the game's unique challenge of existing at the precise intersection of film and game.

Takeaway

Like all post-mortems, it is hoped that this talk will offer specific useful tips, tricks and lessons-learned from the scoring of ERICA. Beyond that, as the FMV genre makes a return to popularity, some of the very ERICA-specific lessons learned might be more broadly applicable in the near future.

Intended Audience

Any members of the game audio community may be considered the intended audience but with a specific emphasis on composers. Given the novelty of ERICA, this talk may be more generally useful to the composer community, with less emphasis on those just starting out.
