While speedrunners are often not considered esports players, their growing community has built a vibrant competitive gaming scene that offers some important lessons for thinking about inclusion and participation. Women, people of color, disabled, LGBTQ+ folks and their allies are creating safe streams and competitive events to showcase their speedrunning skills while keeping the trolls at bay. By undertaking a detailed examination of the origin and influence of the growing movement of inclusivity within the more niche world of speedrunning, this talk presents deeply relevant recommendations for improving diversity and inclusion in the boarder universe of esports.

The audience will learn about the world of speedrunning, explore how inclusive communities form, and gain insight into the shared values they have developed. Attendees will leave with a set of best practices, derived from these inclusive principles, that esports organizations can implement to promote positive change in their communities.

Intended Audience

This talk is intended for anyone involved in esports, including community moderators, event producers, league managers, tournament organizers, etc. Those interested in learning actionable techniques for increasing diversity and inclusion in gaming are also encouraged to attend.
