In 2019, Magic: The Gathering made a long-awaited entrance into esports, bringing more than 25 years of tabletop competitive play legacy into digital with MTG Arena. Elaine Chase, VP Esports at Wizards of the Coast, will explain how her team designed a truly unique system that pairs tabletop with digital competition. Her lecture will examine various hot topics of debate in the esports industry today and reveal where Magic landed on each spectrum and why, exploring the pros and cons Wizards of the Coast weighed when designing the system and taking a critical eye to first year results.
