In this talk, Respawn Entertainment dissects the creation of the character controller for Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. Design goals, technical challenges, and lessons learned are discussed in detail. The physics, animation, and gameplay systems behind the character controller are analyzed, and how these systems are used to construct various navigation and combat mechanics is broken down. Benefits and disadvantages of the implementation are illustrated with concrete examples as they appear in the shipped game.
Attendees will gain insight into the creation of a complex 3rd-person character controller that supports a variety of navigation and combat modes, and how specific aspects of Respawn's approach can be applied to their own projects. Implementation details in Unreal Engine 4 will be shown.
Programmers, technical animators, and/or anyone who has experience with or is interested in character controllers, character motion, character physics, and/or character animation. Advanced physics and animation topics will be discussed but expert knowledge is not necessary.
