Volumetric video (video merged with captured depth data) is increasingly popular in XR filmmaking, but video can be challenging to incorporate into more dynamic interactive forms like videogames. Can design knowledge from full-motion videogames (FMV) offer solutions for designing gameplay around volumetric video in expressive videogames? This presentation offers a series of design strategies, inspired by FMV design, that can help game designers better integrate volumetric video content and gameplay in XR.
Attendees will get an overview of some of the technical and design challenges in integrating interactive volumetric video content in XR games. They will hear strategies for working with volumetric video content based on the design insights and applied knowledge embedded in over 100 FMV and interactive cinema games.
This talk is aimed at creators interested or currently exploring volumetric video content in XR game design, particularly within independent games. While it is not meant to present a technical introduction to volumetric video production, it is appropriate for audiences who do not have prior knowledge of volumetric video.
