Until the 2020s, time loop games were few and far between, and creating one was considered a mean feat. When the team at Arkane Lyon embarked on the journey that ultimately led to the critically-acclaimed Deathloop, its narrative designers had to come up with ways to craft a compelling narrative around a single, ever-repeating day, while respecting Arkane's core values of player freedom and agency.
This talk breaks down the narrative design of Deathloop and shows how its themes and systems were influenced by the unique challenges of a looping premise. It will also demonstrate how you could use the same tools that made Deathloop successful in your own game.
On the example of Deathloop, attendees will find out how even a daunting premise can be tackled with storytelling rudiments, and how their consistent execution can help create a successful narrative experience.
The session is intended for any developer working on the elaboration of story and narrative systems. Prior knowledge of Deathloop is not required, but unavoidable story spoilers abound.
