What do you do when you need to implement something that middleware would make easy, without middleware? That was the challenge for the music implementation in two video slot machine games. I'll describe how my programmer partner and I maximized the scarce command functions available in the proprietary media player and created systems for seamless playback of music with different tempos over random-length gameplay. I'll discuss the coding requirements and tips for composing music that doesn't sound lousy as its tempo increases, as well as how the results positively affected gameplay and player excitement.


Attendees will learn how to creatively implement music and sound without investing in paid middleware. Audio and video will demonstrate the increase in player engagement and excitement via tempo and pitch changes. Examples can be extrapolated into other genres of games and areas of audio production.
