When you play a game, you're choosing to give power to rules that define the game and influence your behavior while you play. But when you stop playing, what happens? This talk explores how games make the invisible rules of the world visible, so anyone can iterate on them. Games, as a medium, are forever a threat to the status quo: they enable us to imagine a more just and equitable society, to architect and design our own systems, and to see through the powers that would strip that from us.
Attendees will gain a new appreciation for the way games help reveal the invisible rules that control our lives and will see how game designers are part of a larger community of architects of human behavior that includes lawyers, politicians, economists, and social scientists.
Game developers of all levels of experience, from career veterans struggling to find meaning in what they've chosen to do with decades of their lives to those wondering whether or not to even take the plunge into games. There are no prerequisites.
