'Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order' uses physical simulation blended with authored animations to create high-fidelity character motion.
In this presentation, we will describe how our physical animation system improves motion fluidity, smooths out transitions and provides a nuanced character performance. Examples shown will include hero traversal mechanics, stormtrooper death performances, and the companion droid BD-1. We will describe several solutions for blending physics with target animations, discuss the control parameters and tradeoffs associated with each technique, and show implementations achieved using Unreal Engine 4 and PhysX.


Attendees will learn how Respawn Entertainment created the system to blend animation and physics for characters. They will gain insights into specific details of the implementation and learn how it was used in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order to achieve high-quality results.
