How do you design narratives that are as real as the player wants them to be? Drawing on his work designing location-based immersive AR, experience designer and Creative Director of AR studio Playlines Rob Morgan will break down the challenges of designing branching digital narratives for real spaces and real players. Rob will show how AR allows developers to dramatize and contextualize real spaces with layers of gameplay and story, with the potential for brand new kinds of immersion through co-operating with the player's imagination, instead of competing with it.
Attendees will leave with detailed insight into: how players relate to digital narratives set in real locations, how building immersion functions differently in AR, benefits of direct, solo communication with players in public spaces, moving from 'whisper in your ear' to 'flashmob' and back, and maximizing possibility space while minimizing friction.
The intended audience is designers, narrative designers and producers with an interest in AR, and particularly those curious (or skeptical!) about how 'Pokemon Go'-style games can build and sustain engaging narratives.
