In this lecture, Squadrons' Creative Director Ian Frazier will explain how a childhood dream was brought to life. Driven by what the devs loved about the Star Wars space sims of the '90s and wanting to bring that experience to modern gamers, this talk will examine modern influences on the game design, challenges and opportunities of developing for VR and 2D concurrently, the execution of various peripherals (HOTAS controllers, etc), how the game evolved over time, and the Squadrons' development team's approach to testing and iteration.
Attendees will come away with a good understanding of how the Squadrons team studied the classic games that inspired us, how we developed and expanded upon those design ideas to create something new, and how we evaluated the experience along the way to stay true to the classics' spirit.
This talk is primarily aimed at game developers with an interest in modernizing classic game concepts, features, or brands, and may be of particular value to those working on reboots, remasters, or spiritual successors to older titles.
