How do you recreate a cinematic experience in VR? What translates easily from film, and what needs to be reimagined? After 4 years of producing a wide range of acclaimed VR content, the team at Secret Location embarked on an ambitious task to produce a 37-minute long, fully-animated, fully volumetric, real-time VR narrative that puts viewers inside a movie. Discover the lessons learned from writing, production design, cinematography, and editing in this nascent form of entertainment, and how the team crafted an experience that pushes the boundaries of “cinema” in VR.

Takeaway

The audience will get an understanding of the creative and technical challenges Secret Location faced trying to recreate the feel of a movie in VR, and get insight into why certain decisions were made, the techniques used, and how an ambitious, 37-min narrative, was made with a relatively small production team.

Intended Audience

This lecture is for anyone interested in making real-time VR narratives. A general familiarity with the game or filmmaking process will give better insight into the topics discussed, but the overview nature of the presentation means even those new to the industry will be able to engage with the content.
