While puzzles should often be confounding, talking about puzzles should NOT be. Have you ever thought "Wow, this puzzle is really fun and elegant!", but couldn't quite articulate why? What about "This puzzle I've made is beautiful, but play testers don't like it, and I don't know what to change." Or maybe you've just started out making puzzles and want to understand what the heck goes into the design process. This talk has you covered!
This session is about the words and concepts we can use, not just to describe, but to THINK about our puzzles and design process. There are many, many axes to puzzle design, and the more clarity and vocabulary we have about what we're doing, the easier it is to make-- and talk about-- great puzzles.
Attendees will get a wide and comprehensive toolbox of concepts and terms to help dissect, understand, and talk about puzzle design. More globally, attendees will walk away thinking more critically and specifically about puzzle design. We'll also get into some best practices and specific, practical advice for making great puzzles!
Puzzle designers/enthusiasts of all skill levels, at any point in their career. Folks who are curious about how to categorize and talk about puzzles.
