Timo Ewalds leads the StarCraft II environment effort as a Software Engineer at DeepMind. At 21, Timo dropped out of his Electrical Engineering Bachelors to build Nexopia, which became the largest social network in Canada at the time. After selling Nexopia in 2008, he finished a Bachelors and Masters in Computing Science at the University of Alberta, using Monte Carlo Tree Search to play and solve the board game Havannah. He spent several years in New York working as a software engineer on the Crisis Response team at Google before joining DeepMind to work on building environments to enable reinforcement learning research. Timo was the first engineer on the StarCraft II effort and leads the PySC2 open source project.
