Kathryn is the co-founder and lead designer at Thorny Games, an award-winning studio that specializes in games about language and identity. Her practice focuses on using games as interactive, persuasive media to explore the interplay of language, culture, and power. Language is intimately human and it provides an apt lens to examine people and their relationship to the natural and built world. Kathryn’s games span topics like the societal impact of language loss (Dialect: A Game about Language and How it Dies), communication as power (Sign) or community-driven therapeutic play (Aphasia Games for Health). Her games have been played and praised widely, with commercial success (e.g., Best Game 2019, Silver Ennie, – a major audience-selected award in Tabletop) and recognition as innovative by industry peers (e.g., Best Tabletop Game 2019, Indiecade Europe). Kathryn has shared insight at some of the foremost gatherings in game design, through speaking at GDC, exhibiting at SXSW, and showing work at museums like the Hedreen Gallery. Outside of games, she plays the theremin badly.
