Shirley McPhaul-CastroCultural Heritage Innovation Technology & Research AssistantPuerto Rico Science Technology & Research Trust

Originally from San José, Costa Rica, Shirley has called Puerto Rico home for over twenty years now. She currently works as a Cultural Heritage Technology Specialist at the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she focuses on project ideation and management. She holds two Master Degrees, one in Viking and Medieval Norse Studies from the University of Iceland, and a second one in Comparative Literature from the University of Puerto Rico. For her thesis in both degrees she chose to direct research towards reception, Popular Culture and video game design, focusing on the adaptation and remediation of myth and legend for one project, and gender theory/semiotics/character design for the second. She actively advocates for the development and study of videogames as social “game changers” and cultural artefacts. She has organized (and hosted) many talks about video games as “serious” tools, including a series of talks held at the University of Puerto Rico titled “ Videojuegos y Cultura” (Videogames and Culture). In addition, she is a founding member of the Puerto Rico Game Developers’ Association and hostess/producer of “Mujeres en Gaming Podcast” (Women in Gaming Podcast), where she interviews spanish-speaking women working in the video game industry. Her current research is geared towards the intersection and potential between videogames and blockchain technologies
