Game development has traditionally been a specialist's dream — find your discipline, grow within it, climb the ranks, be the best. But as the number of those jobs shrink, we need to explore new avenues of our careers. We must not only grow within our core disciplines, but deepen our understanding across each of them. Amanda Farough's career in games has spanned nearly two decades, weaving together a tapestry of threads pulled from journalism, business, production, programming, narrative, and design — the foundation of a Multiclassing game development career. It's time to embrace a career of "and" instead of "or."
Takeaway
Becoming a multiclasser is about learning a new language and strengthening communication across your organization, no matter how large. You're never too old to become a multiclasser, because the practice is about turning curiosity into action. It's an investment in yourself and your career.
Intended Audience
This talk has broad appeal. University students are still being taught that you can't exist professionally in more than one discipline. More experienced developers have been conditioned by the industry to believe that they had no choice but to be one thing and one thing only. It's time for how we think about game studios to evolve beyond the silo.
