Creature vocalizations are more than monster sounds. They are non-verbal performances shaped by creative and production decisions long before recording begins. This session explores the complete creature voice production pipeline, from choosing human performance over animal sound libraries to vocal archetypes, audio prototyping, specialized casting, recording, voice direction, and sound design.
Drawing on more than twenty years of experience as a creature voice actor, casting director, and voice director, Sébastien Croteau demonstrates how each stage contributes to believable, emotionally expressive creature performances. Through production examples and practical methodologies, he explores how prototyping informs casting, recording requirements, and vocal workload management, including the distinction between performer capability and capacity and strategies for distributing demanding vocalizations throughout recording sessions.
The session demonstrates how collaboration between audio directors, sound designers, voice directors, casting directors, and performers supports more informed production decisions and compelling creature performances that communicate emotion without words.
