For twenty years, identical twins Nick and Nate LaMartina have followed remarkably different but parallel paths through game development. One as a sound designer, building interactive audio systems with Wwise and C# in Unity, and the other an artist, crafting shaders and rendering technology in HLSL and Blueprints in Unreal. Along the way, they discovered something unexpected, that despite working in different disciplines, they kept solving the same problems with the same underlying ideas.

This session explores the shared mental models behind audio and graphics and the systems of thinking that drive modern game development. Through personal stories, technical demonstrations, and side-by-side comparisons, it will be shown how exploring beyond one's own discipline makes us better creators, engineers, and collaborators. Whether you're an artist, designer, programmer, or audio professional, you'll leave with a new perspective on creative problem solving, and why the most valuable ideas often exist beyond the boundaries of your job title.

Takeaway

Learn why the most valuable career growth often happens when venturing outside both your specialty and your comfort zone, and how embracing systems thinking can give you greater creative freedom, regardless of your discipline.

Intended Audience

This session is for game developers of all disciplines who are curious about how technical and creative thinking intersect. Audio professionals, technical artists, graphics programmers, gameplay programmers, designers, and students will all find practical, transferable ideas for approaching problems beyond the boundaries of their specialty.
