D2C Crystal Ball: Why Platform Fees Could Actually Be Great for the Future of Web Stores (Presented by FastSpring)
The shift to direct-to-consumer revenue in gaming has created an unprecedented opportunity to diversify revenue channels, increase profit, and harvest unfiltered data, primarily driven by recent court rulings and regulations. With Japan’s Mobile Software Competition Act, however, we see a shift. Unlike Epic v. Apple and Epic v. Google in the US, which currently allow steering to web stores without any fees paid to Apple or Google, the new policy in Japan has introduced platform fees on linked payments. This is a likely precedent as similar fees are included in the proposed global Epic v. Google settlement. What are platform fees, when do they apply, and what does this mean for the future of D2C?
In this chat, D2C leader Chip Thurston shares:
-The current state of play for D2C
-How platform fees have been introduced in Japan How platform fees will likely be introduced in other regions
-Why platform fees will accelerate growth in D2C
-What game publishers can do to maximize D2C% today and in the future.

This talk will enable attendees to understand what they need to do today to prepare for the future of D2C.
