"Games about Games" are a rising trend in interactive works which are self reflexively about video games history, culture, and development. They often feature developers, players, or the history of the medium itself. Some works are nonfiction, others invent personnas or consoles, with many blurring the line between the two. This panel seeks to discuss and dissect this rising trend in game development, with microtalks from across the industry that expand on the logistical and narrative challenges of making games that are about games.

Takeaway

In a medium that is often derivative of older works, hearing a variety of perspectives surrounding game self-reflexivity can allow attendees to find new ways to think about the development and the processes of our industry and its history. This can also, in turn, inform future game creation practices.

Intended Audience

This series of micro-talks is suited for game designers and artists looking for experimentation taking place within the realm of independent game development as well as writers and educators who hope to examine the trend of these self-reflexive games.
