Game narrative is an extremely difficult discipline to teach, learn, and break into. In this session, narrative designers Luca Azenaro-Acero and Zoe Calamar discuss their paths into the industry and the ways they prepared themselves for their narrative careers when their formal education could not. They provide ways to self-teach the most important skills you need to be a writer and/or narrative designer, strategies to network meaningfully, and how to wring every last drop out of the resources offered to industry hopefuls without working yourself to death. If you want to learn how to DIY an education and set yourself up for a successful game narrative career, this is the session for you!

Takeaway

Attendees will learn how to develop the skills needed for a career in game narrative, with or without a formal education.

Intended Audience

This session is intended for anyone hoping to start a career as game writers and/or narrative designers, be they students who have never worked on a game before or industry professionals looking to pivot.
