Audience Level: All
Format: Fireside Chat
Vault Recording: TBD
Audience Level: All
The audience will be introduced to Atuatanga VR, the very first Māori (New Zealand, Indigenous) Language Virtual Reality game. They will hear how this game was created around traditional storylines, traditional music, characters, graphics, language and then set in a dystopian future. A future where reconnecting to the 'Atua' (Gods of the elements) is essential to ensure that people survive on this planet.
The audience will hear how the game has developed into a learning tool alongside real life experiences of
traditional storytelling and connection to place and culture. The audience will hear from Māori teenagers
and see for themselves how this game powerfully integrates gaming into education. The audience will have the opportunity to question the Director, writer and lead creative of Atuatanga VR in a fireside chat.

Takeaway

The audience will be introduced to how Indigenous knowledge, perspective and story can crossover into
gaming and education, how the gaming crossover into real life connection can release a power that is
beyond the console or headset, and how the traditional storyteller of old can meet the storytellers of the future.

Intended Audience

The intended audience are; those working in educational (Indigenous specific, or otherwise) gaming
content. Those wanting to explore gaming and the ways in which it can create connection, communication
and change for individuals and communities. Those wanting to hear how the game creator has combined
traditional knowledge with VR technology.
