This roundtable is hosted by the Devs with Kids SIG.

Last year’s round table discussed ways to involve children in more game jams and how we, as parents, can create kid friendly game jams. This year, we want to focus on the influx of children’s games that allow for kids to make their own game modes and encourage children to participate in the game’s development through creative modes. We’ll take a look at clubs and schools that are hosting game jams for students and we’ll discuss the possibilities for children interested in game development. We’ll also discuss our responsibilities as parents and reasonable boundaries to set for game jams and the children involved.

The goal is for attendees to be able to collaboratively discuss concerns that we have as parents about the nature of children’s games capitalizing on them as developers, game jams, and how we can be proactive in helping them navigate game development as a creative hobby.

Takeaway

Participants in this roundtable session will gain a better understanding of potentially predatory practices by large game companies, ways to work around those, and to encourage their children. Ideally, everyone will leave the roundtable with a toolkit for responsibly supporting their children’s game development hobby.

Intended Audience

All are welcome but the topic and subject matter will be most interesting to parents of children that are interested in or actively participating in game development as a hobby.
