With Metro: Awakening VR, Vertigo Games brought the atmospheric, claustrophobic tension of the best-selling Metro franchise to VR. The project required rethinking of vintage Metro gameplay for VR, but also brought about many interesting challenges associated with general game development. The game also had numerous stakeholders each with their slightly differing set of objectives and expectations. All this against the backdrop of some impactful real-world events, setting the stage for a classic, but fun roller coaster ride through the world of game development.
This post-mortem examines the creative, organizational and technical challenges Vertigo Games faced and the solutions that emerged and/or the lessons learned. It explores not just the specific VR ones, but rather, the general challenges associated with building a game of this magnitude subject to numerous constraints and conditions (VR being one of them) and how the studio dealt with them.

Takeaway

Attendees will leave with concrete advice and specific examples of bringing a successful FPS property to VR, while managing a complex project on a short timeline.

Intended Audience

This session is for studio managers, producers, game directors and any discipline development team members interested in the general challenges of game development.
