Remakes are as popular as ever, but the goalposts keep changing. What is the difference between a Remake and Remaster in today's hyper-competitive gaming landscape? In this session, you will learn about the challenges facing remakes today, how to strike a balance between authenticity to the original while making creative decisions or cuts, and how memories of the original are a powerful tool that can be wielded against you if you don't wield it first.

Specific examples are given from the development of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, a high-profile remake that had to make various design tradeoffs in order to succeed as something both true to the original and modern to today's gameplay expectations.

Takeaway

This talk provides insights on the making of Black Flag Resynced to illustrate how modern remakes must embrace change to survive. Learn strategies for designing changes that feel true to the original, using Youtube as a historical record, and how communicating with before & after is critical to acceptance.

Intended Audience

Developers either involved or interested in remaking games that can stand out in today's competitive marketplace. Knowledge of Assassin's Creed Black Flag is helpful but not required!
