Audience Level: Intermediate
Moving beyond a project-by-project mindset, this lecture will explore long-term studio sustainability and the necessary shift to an audience-first framing of business efforts. Studios are competing in the attention economy and need to embrace the implications of fighting for fans. This leads us down the path of self-publishing as the most viable approach for value creation and studio success. This puts into question how we approach game design, audience definition, marketing and community building efforts... and how we score funding and the right partnerships for long-term success. New funding models and support structures are emerging to feed this new logic.

Takeaway

Attendees will gain insights on how to think about long-term studio strategy and sustainability, along with understanding what it means to create and capture value... especially the value of your fandom. Further, attendees will learn about new funding sources and partnership/support models.

Intended Audience

Studio founders/leaders, indies, and anyone looking into starting a new game studio.
