Songwriting for games introduces unique challenges for composers, especially for iconic IPs like World of Warcraft. In addition to the usual hurdles of writing music, the composer needs to create lyrics that will emotionally connect with millions of players, and provide demos that showcase a polished vocal performance, even on the first draft. In these scenarios, it is highly advantageous to work as a composer-vocalist songwriting team–not only to split up the tasks and prevent crunch, but to facilitate fast and creative iteration for artistically rewarding results.

This talk explores this strategy for writing the anthem "A Place to Call Home" (World of Warcraft: Midnight), walking attendees through tasks such as: dividing up the workflow; parsing the IP's iconic soundscape; developing goals for each demo; researching/writing for the intended recording vocalist (AURORA); and most importantly, how to musically support each other's creative decisions or implement changes as a team.

Takeaway

Audiences will learn about the unique challenges of writing music for a preexisting, iconic video game IP; songwriting for games in general, and the various milestones of that particular process; collaborating as a creative duo to create better results AND save time; and the benefits of singer-composer collaboration, specifically

Intended Audience

Composers, songwriters and vocalists of all experience levels who are interested in writing songs for video games will benefit from this talk (particularly those who have not worked on a largescale preexisting IP like WoW). The advice in this talk will be applicable to composers who are either in-house at a studio, or independent contractors.
