Ethical Games: Forum On A Self-Assessment Tool Against Exploitative Design
Many game developers care about creating games that are ethical and respectful of players, but they don't necessarily know what this means, or how to do it. Especially when the time comes to monetize the game and hopefully make it profitable. This interactive forum introduces a tool developed by academic researchers (based on evidence instead of moral panics) precisely to help game developers assess their game systems and separate what serves their art and the gameplay from what can be exploitative for players (and thus potentially unethical). This experimental session will allow participants to discover the tool, try it out in small groups (workshop-style), and provide feedback to improve it.
Takeaway
Attendees will discover the first Ethical Games Self-Assessment Tool for game developers and how to separates art and good design from exploitative patterns. They will also have the opportunity to participate in improving the tool.
Intended Audience
This interactive forum is intended for game developers who design game systems and monetization systems, and anyone interested in making games more ethical for players.
