Agenda
Punching Across the Room in 'Batman: Arkham Shadow'
As ardent Arkham fans themselves, Camouflaj took the task of translating a fully featured version of the iconic IP to VR with great care. Countless hours of research into the lore and an extremely detailed analysis of the previous games was critical to their success. The very passionate (and very vocal) Arkham community was going to make or break how Batman: Arkham Shadow was received. Keeping it "Authentic Arkham", one of Camouflaj's daily refrains, was non-negotiable. Perhaps most daunting was translating freeflow combat, whose influence can still be felt in modern games 17 years after Batman: Arkham Asylum's original release. In this talk, Ryan Darcey (Design Director) and Troy Johnsen (Principal Gameplay Engineer) discuss how this was achieved along with how they translated core support systems like locomotion and gadgets.
Takeaway
Attendees will gain a detailed understanding of how Camouflaj translated Arkham's gameplay (e.g. Grappling, Gliding, Batarang, Explosive Gel, Detective Vision, etc.) from the flatscreen to VR, with an emphasis on Arkham's iconic freeflow combat.
Intended Audience
Developers pursuing AAA quality action/adventure games in VR will benefit most from attending this talk, but there are no prerequisites.
