Is it possible to create a tutorial that excites players? '007 First Light' by IO Interactive, did just that by leaning hard into the classic film technique; the training montage. Senior Level Designer Olivia van den Born will guide attendees through the entire development process for the onboarding of '007 First Light' through the lens of the montage; from the initial direction and very first prototype all the way through the 11th hour additions and public reception.
The presenter will talk about their strong collaboration with the narrative team, discuss user research results, share thoughts on direction and pacing as a gameplay tool, offer insights about balancing gameplay and narrative and discuss exactly why this sequence resonated so much with players.

Takeaway
Attendees will come away with a stronger understanding of how to marry gameplay, narrative and tutorialization into a memorable experience, as well as the value of starting work early on the tutorial, regardless of the current state of the game.
Intended Audience
Primarily Level and Narrative Design, but accessible enough for anyone interested in a behind the scenes look at how IO Interactive built an engaging and narratively driven tutorial sequence that was very well received by critics and players.
